Leigh Whannell in Talks to Direct THE GREEN HORNET AND KATO for Universal Pictures
Leigh Whannell is in talks to direct The Green Hornet and Kato for Universal Pictures. Whannell is the filmmaker who has brought us films such as The Invisible Man, Upgrade, and Insidious: Chapter 3. The studio loved what he did with The Invisible Man, so it makes sense that they’d want to get back into business with him for another project.
The studio already has a script for the film written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, Panic Room, War of the Worlds).
Green Hornet is the alter ego of Britt Reid, owner-publisher of The Daily Sentinel. Armed with knowledge from his sources, cool weapons, a supercar known as the Black Beauty, and teamed with his trusty badass aide Kato, Reid became The Green Hornet, a vigilante crime fighter wanted by the police and feared by the criminal world.
Universal optioned rights to The Green Hornet from Amasia, who picked up the rights earlier this year with Amasia’s co-founders Michael Helfant and Bradley Gallo producing. Helfant is a veteran Hollywood executive who was president and chief operating officer of Marvel Studios for several years starting in 2005.
I always enjoyed the original Green Hornet series from the 60s. The most recent version made was the 2011 film that starred Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz and Jay Chou. That was… ok. As for what we can expect from Whannell’s film, “viewers can expect a more serious action thriller that would work toward his strengths.”
What do you think about Whannell directing The Green Hornet and Kato? Is this a movie that you even be interested in watching? Who would you like to see cast in the film?
