Leonardo DiCaprio Teams with Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu for THE REVENANT

Leonardo DiCaprio and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu have signed on to a period revenge thriller called The Revenant. It tells the story of “a gold-seeking fur trapper who is mauled by a bear. When the two men who are were supposed to take care of him rob him and leave him to die alone, the man wills himself to survive and goes on a 350 mile journey though the wilderness to survive.”

That sounds intense. And also like there are going to be a lot of close-ups of gross, bloody injuries. I know someone whose father survived a bear attack. He needed 1300 stitches, so many that the hospital ran out of the normal thread they use for stitches and had to use fishing line. Gross, right? I imagine this movie is going to be that kind of disgusting. But also, triumph of the human spirit and all that. I assume the revenge thriller part starts after he makes the 350 mile journey, so maybe they'll dispense with the bear attack gore quickly and move on to graphic, violent, revenge gore.

This project has been in development for years. Various producers and writers have been attached, and Innaritu has been working on it since at least 2011, meeting with Sean Penn as well as DiCaprio. The timing is finally right, and they should start shooting in September for a fall 2015 release. The current iteration of the script is by Mark L. Smith.
