Let Scheduling Conflicts Add to Your D&D Game's Story with I HAD TO GO BECAUSE 2

Back in 2019, Ashley May released I Had To Go Because… which was a fantastic supplement that a Dungeons & Dragons dungeon master (DM) could use to help explain why a party member suddenly couldn’t travel with the group. It was designed to help RPG groups deal with scheduling conflicts and keep some semblance of in-world continuity. The supplement utilized a character’s background to create an excuse and it was brilliant. Just a couple of weeks ago, May released I Had To Go Because 2. This second supplement is a continuation and adds “excuses” for all of the officially published Backgrounds through Wild Beyond The Witchlight that the first one doesn’t cover.

The Backgrounds are organized alphabetically in I Had To Go Because 2 and offer a brief paragraph about it. Then, there’s a d8 chart that can be utilized how the DM sees fit for explaining why a character isn’t with the party for the required sessions. For example, maybe the Ranger who has the Smuggler Background was smuggling weapons for a peasant uprising and then saw that his contact was crossed off a list of criminals so they have to make sure the resistance knows where the weapons are so they can find freedom. It really is a fantastic tool that I would recommend picking up.

The greatest challenge adventurers face is scheduling. A last-minute cancellation doesn't need to ruin everyone's plans. When armed with I Had To Go Because 2, any Dungeon Master is just a pageflip away from an answer to the question, "Hey, where did the bard go?"

When combined with the original I Had To Go Because, both products now cover all officially published Backgrounds, up through Wild Beyond The Witchlight.
