Letitia Wright and John Boyega Set to Star in Steve McQueen Series SMALL AXE
Letitia Wright (Black Panther) and John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) have been hired to star in the upcoming British anthology series being made by Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave, Widows), Small Axe. It will air on BBC, but has also been picked up by Amazon. The series is set in “London’s West Indian community, starting in the late 1960s and running until the early ’80s.” Production is currently under way in London.
Variety reports the following description:
The series will comprise six parts and tell five different stories. Its title is derived from a Jamaican proverb with resonance throughout the Caribbean: “If you are the big tree, we are the small axe.” It is also the title of a Bob Marley song from his 1973 album “Catch a Fire.”
Director and executive-producer McQueen had the following to say about this passion project of his:
“I felt these stories needed to be shared,” said McQueen, who will also exec produce. “I wanted to relive, reevaluate and investigate the journeys that my parents and the first generation of West Indians went on to deliver me here today calling myself a black British person. What’s important about our stories is that they are local but at the same time global.
“I think audiences will identify with the trials, tribulations and joy of our characters as well as reflecting on the present environment in which we find ourselves,” McQueen added. “The dynamic nature of the series allows us to confront injustice in the face of adversity.”
This sounds like it will be really interesting. The stars and director are fantastic, and the story is different and historical and sounds like it will be eye-opening. Does this sound like a story you’ll be interested in?
Small Axe will air on BBC One and Amazon in 2020.
