Let's Talk About DUNCANVILLE Episode 5 - "Fridgy"
The new episode of Duncanville was hilarious. If you haven’t watched it yet, you can find it on Hulu. New episodes air on Fox every Sunday before becoming available on Hulu the day after. “Fridgy” is an interesting commentary about technology that is full of comedic genius.
This episode features the Harris’s fridge dying and they have to get a new one. The sales rep at the store sells them a high-tech fridge that can (and does) do everything for the family. Most of the family loves it and they name it Fridgy. After a while though, Annie comes to resent it, and the episode becomes a commentary about our reliance on technology and the human disconnection that many feel is happening as individuals become more absorbed into their screens and technology rather than actually interacting and connecting with each other. It’s very interesting.
The episode then takes another twist when the Harrises end up being captured by the sales rep from the store who ends up being a rep for ConVee, the company that makes the new fridge. They then try to get the Harris family to become their spokesfamily, and there’s a small commentary on consumerism thrown into the episode.
So, what were some of the highlights of the episode? Well, for starters, Mr. Mitch keeps trying to get feedback from the kids and their relatives on his new rap album, and the only one who listens to it is Annie. This ties back into that whole commentary though. Everyone’s so obsessed with the tech except Annie that no one pays any mind to Mr. Mitch and keeps saying they’ll check it out “someday.” Annie listens though, provides feedback, and then becomes a producer I guess? It’s kind of random, but a fun retort to most of the episode.
There are also a few moments where Kimberly and a girl in her grade keep coming across each other and those are pretty funny. The girls are always quick to play the “I won’t tell anyone if you won’t,” game. In addition, everyone watches a “kids” show called Barking Enforcement which is pretty fun in and of itself, but is taken to a new level when Annie is watching it alone and it’s revealed to not be child friendly in the least. It makes me think of all the people out there on platforms that disguise content as kid friendly, but it’s really very unfriendly children’s content. Make sure you know what your children are watching.
