Let's Talk About The Intriguing Fantasy Comic Series FOLKLORDS #1
Many comic readers have been curious about Folklords from Matt Kindt and Matt Smith. I got to read the first issue and I’m intrigued. I’ll keep my spoilers down below, but I like the world that is being created in this story and can see some interesting paths for characters. If you’ve been curious about the series, I would recommend checking out the first issue and seeing how you feel. Now, let’s get to the chatter.
Folklords #1 shows us a world that many would say fits into the realm of fantasy with a dash of dystopian. Everyone seems to live in thatch-roofed houses, the technology seems more primitive than what we currently have, and everyone seems to dress like they’re at a renaissance festival. Combine that with the troll that acts as a ferry, and I think you’ve got a decent case. I did find it interesting though that Demure seems to wear something that looks a lot more like a graphic tee or graphic tank top.
Then, of course, there’s Ansel who somehow is wearing an ill-fitted suit. Where did he learn about suits? It doesn’t seem to be something readily available at the village, so something is up and I’m sure it has to do with the Folklords that he wants to find.
Anyways, the story so far features Ansel running to a treehouse party where he explains he wants his quest to be to find the Folklords and everyone gets really quiet and you understand that this is a no-no. Even his friend Demure tries to be encouraging while saying, “Don’t do it.” The next day, all the teens announce to the village what their quest is going to be, but before Ansel can make his announcement, his friend Archer takes his quest. What a jerk. Of course, the dystopian rulers don’t’ take kindly to this and decide that the ceremony is canceled, and they’ll just assign everyone’s quests.
Ansel and Archer talk about what happened and decide to go on the epic quest for the Folklords together. They’re almost out of trouble when a guard stops them. However, it turns out that the guard is chill and wants them to go on the adventure. The most puzzling piece though is the very last panel that features someone using a fountain pen or quill pen to write something, but there’s also a smartphone on their desk.
Like I said, I’m really interested to see where this goes. I also really hope we see more of Charles (the troll). He was a lot of fun. However, I worry that we won’t see too much of him since I don’t know that we’ll be seeing too much more of this town/world that the adventure starts in for a long time.
