Let's Talk About GO GO POWER RANGERS #25

Go Go Power Rangers #25 from Ryan Parrott and Sina Grace, with art from Francesco Mortarino, has started to answer a fair number of questions for those reading “Necessary Evil.” The issue is available now, and I recommend you check out the whole story if you haven’t yet. If you want to remain free of spoilers, stop reading this article now.

So, we start off with what we saw in the preview that was released the other day. Tommy’s working out and thinking of heading to Hong Kong with his uncle, Jason’s enduring the horror of regaining memories lost after the events of “Shattered Grid,” and the Blue Emissary goes and talks with Zordon. We’ll pick up in this conversation.

The Blue Emissary is talking with Zordon about what is happening a little and it’s really interesting to see Zordon in this moment. He’s feeling like a failure. Rita’s gone and he feels terrible for not bringing her to the light. He’s feeling awful for the fact that Tommy lost his Green Ranger powers. Zordon is very relatable in this moment and it’s a little weird. Watching the show, Zordon is always the omniscient being with very little emotion, but now he’s here feeling guilty and remorseful. It’s a very interesting development.

Eventually, the Blue Emissary tells Zordon that Zordon has not failed anyone and he offers to help Zordon create a new Ranger without Ninjor who Zordon is struggling to contact. At this point, things go dark and we essentially enter the “White Light” episodes.

We’re going to do a quick jump over to Lord Zedd and the forces of evil. Over here, Zedd is sparring with Goldar who seemingly is barely holding up in this training. Zedd is clearly not a joke (something we started seeing in the preview for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #45) and Goldar doesn’t seem to be much more than a child. However, we also learn that Goldar had a brother and apparently Zedd killed him. WHAT!? Zedd then calls Finster to create a bunch of Putties to occupy the Rangers while the Sentinel monster grows in strength.

The Rangers are ambushed by the aforementioned Putties and its pretty uneventful except for the fact that Jason seems to have a “Shattered Grid” memory show up and cause him some pain. Zack and Trini notice, but Jason brushes it off. The Rangers can’t get a hold of Alpha or Zordon which leads them to the Command Center where everything is dark. Billy grabs some information from the computers, but he can’t figure it out there, so he goes back to his lab. There, Billy realizes that he can’t crack the code, and he ends up going to Prometheus to get their help in figuring it out. There, they find that there’s a hidden room in the Command Center.

Meanwhile, Zordon and Alpha teleport Tommy to the secret room and they tell him that they could make him a new Ranger. The catch is that he has to go alone to a distant planet to recover an energy source. Tommy is very hesitant about this and wonders if it might be better for someone else to become this new Ranger.

Additionally, while patrolling Angel Grove, Kim is texting Matt who’s looking for a break and wants to hang out with her. She seems happy for him to have the ability to live a normal life, and she says she doesn’t need help. I’ll be honest, I don’t think this relationship’s going anywhere guys and I’m not just saying that because Tommy’s coming back as the White Ranger.

Finally, we have Jason and the Blue Emissary at the Command Center. Jason is morphed and trying to find a program that Alpha used to find and select the current team of Rangers. Jason’s having a hard time finding it and starts to lose it. The Blue Emissary then tells Jason that the Emissary is all alone now (apparently something happened to the other Emissaries) and tries to empathize with him. It’s at this point that Trini and Zack show up and catch Jason and the Emissary. Oops.

This issue answered a lot of questions. There are still some that aren’t answered, but this is probably the first time one of these comics has answered more questions I have than asked them. I love the way that they took the second season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and while there are differences to fit the world the comic has created, there’s a lot that ties in with direct episodes in this issue and there are a lot of things that work with how the episodes worked. I freaking love these comics guys!
