Let's Talk About LEGO MASTERS Episode 5 - "Mega City Block"
Episode 5 of LEGO Masters featured the contestants building mega city blocks out of LEGO bricks. The competition was fierce, and the creations were amazing. Mark & Boone created a skyscraper that was essentially a pile of food trucks, Krystle & Amie built an incredible cyberpunk dystopia. There was also a surprising amount of drama in this episode. There was a lot of smack talk between Aaron & Christian and Mel & Jermaine, skyscrapers fell apart leading to a breakdown, and there was even a little spat between Mark and Boone.
As I watched I wasn’t paying attention, so I didn’t realize that when they presented their blocks that we were still pretty early in the episode. That’s when Will Arnett hit the builders with the episode’s twist. The builders had to add monsters attacking to their build. This was a godsend for a few of the teams including Aaron & Christian, whose 14-story skyscraper lost about 5-ish stories while moving, and Sam & Jessica, who had a hard time finishing their build in the first 14 hours. The 4-hour second part of the build was not a blessing for Krystle & Amie though, who seemed to really struggle with adding things to their vision. This unfortunately is what gets them kicked off, and I can’t blame the judges too much. This was their third week in a row where they struggled. I will say, I can’t believe Mel & Jermaine didn’t add any more figures to their glass skyscraper. Lucky for them though, the minifigures on the ground and the monster were able to tell more of a story.
I really want to know how they decide which builds are going to be animated at the end. Last week it was the builds of the top two teams. Then this week it was of the winning build (Mark & Boone) as well as Flynn & Richard’s build which was fine, but I didn’t think it warranted emphasis.
Also, when do the builders eat? They spent 18 hours building in this episode, seemingly with no breaks. They need to eat! Also, on these longer build days do they get to sleep in the next day or are they just running on less and less sleep? No wonder the tension gets high!
I’m really excited for next week when it looks like we’ll have racing cars as well as strong structural bridges being tested.
