Let's Talk About LEGO MASTERS Episode 6 - "Need for Speed/Super-Bridges"

The latest episode of LEGO Masters was a lot of fun to watch. It might be my favorite episode to date, it was so fun. If you haven’t watched it yet, stop reading this now as there are spoilers ahead. You can watch new episodes of LEGO Masters on Fox Wednesday nights and on Hulu starting the next day.

This episode was a lot of fun because it featured not one, but two builds! The first build was a car that would race against the other teams in order to get additional time for their second build. As someone who built Pinewood Derby cars as a kid, this was a blast from the past and really got me excited. I really want to go build a car now. I will admit that I was dubious of Mark & Boone’s strategy of not including the rubber tires, but I guess it paid off for them as they won. It was sad, though, to see half of the cars not pass the finish line.

After the cars, the building teams had to build strong and sturdy bridges. This made me think back to high school science classes where you had to build bridges out of toothpicks or similar materials and see how much it could hold. We got to see some pretty cool bridges built here. It was also crazy because the portion felt particularly short because of how much footage of the testing there was. We didn’t get as much time with each of the teams and what they were going for, but we got a little here and there.

Overall, the bridges looked great and were able to support some surprising weight. It was a bummer that Mel & Jermaine couldn’t meet the height parameter though, and therefore were automatically put in the bottom two. I do wonder if they would’ve been in the bottom two had they met parameters or if—aesthetically—they were better than Sam & Jessica’s build.

I think my favorite parts of the episode were when everyone was sympathetic towards Flynn & Richard when their bridge only held 45 lbs (to be fair, they started last and therefore had 25 minutes less than Mel & Jermaine) and when everyone celebrated for Tyler & Amy’s and Mark & Boone’s bridges holding 1000 lbs! I loved the camaraderie shown in this episode.

I was sad to see Mel & Jermaine go, but someone had to go. Also, I feel like Tyler & Amy got snubbed this week. I liked Mark & Boone’s bridge, but I thought Tyler & Amy’s was more whimsical and they should’ve gotten mad props for not using TechnicBRICKS like everyone else! They used materials that were supposedly lesser and they tied for first place! It’s crazy to me that they did not win the Golden Brick.

What did you think of this latest episode? Were Mark & Boone the right pick for the Golden Brick?
