Let's Talk About LEGO MASTERS Episode 9 - "Star Wars"

Last night, fans got to see the three remaining teams on LEGO Masters make some really cool Star Wars builds. If you haven’t watched the episode, this is your warning that spoilers are ahead. You can watch all episodes on Hulu now and the finale will air next Wednesday on Fox.

Throughout the episode, we got to see BB-8, C-3PO, and R2-D2. This was a lot of fun, but it does feel a little weird to me that all of the celebrity guests only stick around for like 1/2-2/3 of the episode. Anyway, on to the builds.

First, each team had to build a motorized droid to fit into the Star Wars universe. I thought Mark & Boone had this challenge in the bag. They do really well with things like that and the other teams both seemed to struggle with their droids. Sam & Jessica had some problems with their droid being a little too heavy for the motors they installed, and Tyler & Amy kept struggling with their droid’s head falling off. In the end though, Tyler & Amy were able to provide a droid that moved, didn’t lose its head, and definitely had more personality. This is not to discount Mark & Boone’s work, though, which was incredible, and I thought it was awesome how they got that front plate to pop off. Sam & Jessica had a pretty ok droid, but I didn’t feel it was on the same level as the other two.

The second challenge featured the teams bringing iconic Star Wars scenes to life. This was the round that would lead to a team being eliminated. Or at least that’s what we thought until the end when it was revealed that no team was going home and all three would be a part of the finale. In my opinion, all three of these builds were absolutely incredible, and I think my favorite was actually Sam & Jessica’s as they recreated the Battle on Crait. They did such amazing work with the red and white palate they had and the scene was incredibly dynamic.

I felt so bad for Mark & Boone when their AT-ST fell apart towards the end. That was rough since it looked so nice, and Boone spent so much time on it. Their build was really well done, but I don’t know that I would’ve ranked them as the winners.

Finally, Tyler & Amie. Their Battle of Hoth build was absolutely incredible! I can definitely understand why the judges ranked them lowest. The judges are always looking for lots of color and the Battle of Hoth doesn’t really lend itself to a lot of color. A lot of that scene is white and grey. They did some really cool stuff by adding the explosion, but I guess they really just needed some more explosions or something.

I didn’t get a great look at all the different options available to the teams, but I think I saw the trench run from A New Hope. I probably would’ve chosen that. What scene from Star Wars would you have recreated in LEGO?
