Let's Talk About MIGHTY MORPHIN #7

What the heck!? Mighty Morphin #7 has dropped from Ryan Parrott, Marco Renna, and Walter Baiamonte, and it is nuts! There’s so much to look at, I’m not sure where to start. If you haven’t read it yet, this is your spoiler warning! You can grab physical copies from your local comic shop and digital copies from comiXology (affiliate link) and more. BOOM! Studios provided me a copy to read.

It’s The New Mighty Morphin Team versus...The New Green Ranger! But whoever’s left standing will have to deal with Lord Zedd’s shocking machinations. And his even more surprising ally.

Let’s pick up where the preview left off. Billy and Alpha are working on whatever their part of the plan is, and Billy’s struggling with his friends being out there and him not being there. Zordon works to calm him down by sharing a little bit about his own life before he was a floating head. This is when Zartus from Eltar contacts Zordon! Zartus explains the threat of the Empyreals and how Eltar needs Earth and the Power Rangers to help fight them. He says that the Eltarians will be helping Earth with Zedd and then they can change goals to the Empyreals. In all honesty, something doesn’t seem right about this. I could see Zartus being a puppet or something for the Empyreals somehow.

Then, we go back inside the shield and find some weird things. Lord Zedd’s monsters are helping people, Chaos Putties are rebuilding the city, and it’s all very weird. Candice does find Bulk and Skull, but then lies to Tommy and Aisha about that. I wonder what the plan with those two was. Was it just to get them out or did they have a mission for the two? I totally get Candice not wanting to talk to them though. Things aren’t exactly smooth between them all. Aisha wants to hold off and find out what’s going on before they proceed, but Tommy’s in a rush. They end up powering up the Tigerzord and the buildings turn into giant Chaos Putties that fight it. Zedd tells Tommy that the city is his now and he’s in complete control.

Meanwhile, the other Rangers ended up surrendering to Matt and Goldar. They’re taken to see Grace and there’s an argument. Zedd’s evil, but Grace argues he’s done more than Zordon. It’s a question of the long term versus the short term I feel. Eventually, the see the Tigerzord getting beat up and things aren’t looking good. Kim tries getting something from Matt, but he just stands there so she punches him. I’m not going to lie, I like this fierce Kim! This is when Zedd shows up and says that he’s willing to withdraw from the Earth as long as the Rangers give him Zordon. Zedd seems to know that the Earth is going to get roped into the fight with the Empyreals and says that everything he’s doing now is for peace. Once again, something doesn’t seem right. Zedd’s evil and smart. I have a hard time believing he doesn’t have a longer strategy in mind.

Parrott has gone crazy with Power Rangers and I love it. It’s weird how I feel that the stories often result in deals with the devils, but that’s clearly just the part of the story in we’re in. Tough calls have to be made. Characters are being pushed out of comfort zones. Beliefs and values are being challenged. Wow!
