Let's Talk About MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #45

Thanks to the Thanksgiving holiday last week, I got a little behind on my comics, but nevertheless, I am now caught up and cannot express how happy I was with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #45. Some things happened that made a lot of sense but were surprising. If you haven’t had the chance to read the issue yet, be warned that there are spoilers ahead.

This issue starts off with what we saw in the preview. That includes a brief fight with Lord Zedd who is really awesome, but then Jason calls in his Zord to pummel normal-sized Zedd. This, of course, incapacitates the villain and the Omega Rangers capture him in a jar. This made me a little disappointed as I was hoping for Zedd to really work them over a bit more. However, the conclusion does make sense as the whole point was Jason wanted to just rush in and quickly take out Zedd.

Then, Jason goes to see Zordon who is not happy. He’s not happy because he’s worried about what evil force will fill the void left by Zedd’s capture. I don’t blame him. Zedd was powerful, but chances are only something more powerful will appear to challenge the Rangers and they were already struggling a bit with Zedd. After this conversation, Jason goes to leave when Tommy catches him and tries getting some advice about being a leader. Of course, he doesn’t know he’s talking to Jason and it’s an interesting scene to be sure.

Cut over to the four remaining villains we know: Baboo, Finster, Goldar, and Squat. They ran away and made it to Earth but are hiding out in some abandoned shed. They’re discussing their options, even contemplating joining Zordon and the good guys. However, it turns out that Goldar grabbed Zedd’s broken staff and so now he thinks that the four of them can defeat the Power Rangers. I did laugh to myself at this point because what makes them think that’ll work?

I’m going to skip some things that happen with Jason, Trini, and Zack, and go straight to the big “WHAT!?” of the issue. So, after defeating Lord Zedd, the Power Rangers showed up at Zedd’s castle and Kiya sees Tommy as the White Ranger and wants to kill him because she sees him as Lord Drakkon. Well, they do their best to calm her down, but she’s not happy. Later, we see Kiya talking to the Blue Emissary and he tries to get her to drop it and understand that this Tommy Oliver is not going to become Lord Drakkon. He explains that he gave Tommy the White Light power and this probably is what sends Kiya over the edge. She ends up seemingly killing the Blue Emissary. As if this wasn’t bad enough, we then see her free Garrison Vox and Cavotus as she explains that they need to destroy all Rangers. Uh oh!

This was a crazy twist to me. If you’ve been following along, you’ll know that I didn’t trust the Blue Emissary. Apparently, I was wrong. Also, I was really liking Kiya. This is going to be a little hard for me to deal with. I also think that these three empowered are going to be a lot more dangerous than Zedd was, which I think is going to lead to some interesting reflections by Jason. I wonder where this story is going to lead. Also, how bad do you think Baboo, Finster, Goldar, and Squat are going to be?
