Let's Talk About MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #51
Today, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #51 is out, and it’s a great first issue to kick off a new story. If you haven’t been able to read it yet, you can purchase a physical copy from your local comic shop or digital copies from sites like comiXology.
Not a lot happens in this issue, but enough happens to get the ball rolling, and that’s what we were looking for. The Rangers get into a bit of a tussle with Lord Drakkon, who looks worse for wear, and it’s Tommy who’s able to knock him out. The Rangers then talk to Zordon about what’s happening, and he’s less concerned about Drakkon and more worried about what Drakkon is running from. Personally, I was more so wondering what the heck Drakkon was doing in Promethea. Did I just not remember that happening? I must have because no one bats an eye when Billy talks about that.
The Rangers then just get to talk with each other for a few panels, we learn that Rocky knows Matt from football, and Aisha sees a little darker side of Tommy. Billy also goes to get some information from Drakkon who appears to be crazier than normal and he asks to be let out for his help and a smoothie from the Juice Bar. He’s more unsettling in my opinion than the dictator we saw in previous issues. Eventually, they have to fight Psychoslug the Terror Snail. This monster has some pretty wicked ooze that hurts the Rangers and a strong shell to protect itself, but through some teamwork, they’re able to destroy with the Power Blaster. That’s their story this issue.
Going over to Lord Zedd. He finds Baboo, Finster, Goldar, and Squat hanging out on Earth and even gives them some praise for trying to defeat the Rangers in his absence. He then says that he needs their help and unleashes Psychoslug. After Psychoslug’s defeat we learn that this was all a ploy to power up the Green Chaos Crystal. In case you don’t remember, this is the same crystal Zedd used to create his Dark Rangers in the second season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. You know, the ones with terrible costumes. Well, Zedd then hits the four evil generals (for lack of a better word) into his new Dark Rangers, but they notice that there needs to be one more and that being needs to be a leader. Obviously, Finster suggests Rita who I imagine we’ll see get roped into all of this next issue.
I think one of my favorite things about the transformation is Finster’s reaction. The monster creator exclaims, “The Color!” I got a kick out of that line. What was your favorite part of MMPR #51?
