Let's Talk About MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1

It’s finally here! Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 is finally available and it already looks like a better crossover than what fans got back in the 90s. If you have not yet read the premiere issue, be warned that there are spoilers ahead. In short, if you love MMPR and TMNT, you’ll love this comic.

So, we start off with what we saw in the preview: a somber opening and then the Rangers fighting one of Rita’s monsters. They come out victorious but want to know where Tommy is. Apparently, he left to take care of some family business. Well, then we go over to the Turtles and they’re kicking Foot butt. That is until one soldier who looks a lot like Tommy is able to beat Raph and let everyone getaway.

The Rangers are lamenting not having time to keep up their grades and Kimberly is with Zordon and Alpha trying to figure out where Tommy went. They try to placate Kimberly by saying that he hasn’t had to morph, so he must not be in too much danger. Well, that’s when we see Tommy under the guise of Tommy Marshall working with Karai. Tommy’s then sent on a top-secret mission where he encounters the Turtles. Tommy morphs and the Rangers then teleport to find him and they end up in a tussle with the Turtles. Tommy asks Kimberly to trust him as he escapes with a piece of tech. Turns out though that Shredder knew who Tommy was all along! WHAT!?

So, this issue has raised a lot of questions which is great for a first issue. How did Tommy end up with the Foot Clan? How did Shredder know who Tommy was? Is Shredder working with Rita? Why don’t the Rangers deal with more problems outside of Angel Grove? It was also a lot of fun just seeing the characters interact. Having the honest mistake of the Rangers and Turtles fighting is a classic move and always a treat for fans. The banter from the Turtles is pretty spot-on, especially when they start critiquing Tommy’s breaking and entering. I cannot wait for the next issue.
