Let's Talk About ONCE & FUTURE #2

Once & Future #2 is out now and it picks up where the first issue left off. We get to find out quite a bit more about the situation as Bridgette explains a little more to Duncan. If you don’t want to hear anything else, stop here.

In the car, Duncan still has a gun to his head, but Bridgette explains to him why she didn’t tell him anything. The idea was that his life would be more peaceful without constantly worrying about some fantastical beast attacking him. It’s also explained that the Questing Beast was attacking him last issue because Duncan is about to embark on a quest. I do really enjoy the brief moment when Bridgette reads the text Rose sends Duncan checking in on how things were with his Gran. That’s a fun and sweet moment.

Then, we get to a creepy dungeon where the supposed bad guys are trying to open up a coffin. This coffin just happens to belong to a king named Arthur who once ruled Britain. He is awoken using the magic powers of the scabbard and then he kills the men with the evil woman because they are descendants of Anglo-Saxons. The woman, named Elaine, then basically asserts herself as Arthur’s advisor after Arthur then raises undead knights like Sir Gawain. Elaine then mentions she has a Galahad (presumably her son). Based on the way she talks about it and Bridgette’s reaction (yes, Bridgette and Duncan eventually sneak close enough to see this all happen), this is a big deal.

Oh, and did I mention that we learn that Bridgette and Elaine used to work together? Yeah, I’m a little confused at that one. I guess Elaine is a little older than I thought. I imagined that she was roughly the same age as Duncan, but Bridgette says she stopped before Duncan was born. I’m sure we’ll get some answers down the line.

The issue ends with Bridgette and Duncan running, but they make noise, so the knights go after them and it looks like Once & Future #3 will start with a fight. Hopefully, we then learn a little more about this whole Galahad situation and what it means as well. I don’t think Bridgette’s going to be in too many more issues, but I’m unsure if she’ll die or simply leave it to Duncan while she aids in knowledge of lore and such. What are your thoughts on Once & Future #2? Did I miss something?
