Let's Talk About ONCE & FUTURE #3

Once & Future #3 is out now and with each issue, I fall in love with the series more and more. Kieron Gillen and Dan Mora are doing a magnificent job with this story. If you don’t want any spoilers for the latest issue, stop reading now.

Once & Future #3 picks up with Duncan and Bridgette running from Arthur and his undead lackeys. It’s honestly not very eventful for the first couple of pages. Beyond the running, Arthur sets out to find a sword “more fitting for [his] station.” Bridgette then tells Duncan they need to find a Doctor of History. Her old pal Charles is dead, so they can’t go to him and that’s when Duncan opens his big mouth and says that Rose (his date from the first issue) happens to be a Doctor of History. At this point, Bridgette says something interesting about “the story’s got its teeth into you already.” Is she talking about fate or something else? Is she just being dramatic?

What follows is some of my favorite stuff. They go to visit Rose even though it’s very late and the very first thing Bridgette does is pull a gun on her. There really are some comedic lines at this point from all parties involved and I absolutely love Rose.

Rose is then dragged to an old archive where they find a lockbox from Charles. Inside is a smaller box with files and keys along with a paper saying that if they’re opening the box, everything they’ve been told is true. The three then head out to Bath Abbey. They enter, and there are spirits floating around. They do not look good either. They’re fairly withered. They don’t attack the group, they just look like they’ve decomposed a little.

Duncan and Bridgette once again go looking for Arthur and find him as he draws a sword from a stone. Like me and Duncan, you may be thinking, “that’s Excalibur!” Bridgette says that it’s not the famous sword as Excalibur belongs to the Lady of the Lake. This is just another sword. With a sword in hand, Arthur gets some crazy evil-looking armor and robes and we meet Elaine’s son Galahad. I originally thought Galahad was like a toddler, so I’m a little relieved to see he’s a teenager or young adult (hard to tell in comics). Bridgette starts getting something out of Duncan’s bag and lo and behold she’s planning on shooting Galahad.

Now, I’m sure something is going to go wrong here, but I’m not sure what it is going to be. I’m a little worried that something’s going to happen to Rose, but I’m not sure what that would be since Elaine’s men seemed to have all died, so I don’t know who would attack her. It’s nice to bring Rose in to help balance Duncan and Bridgette in my opinion, and I can’t wait to see where Once & Future #4 takes us.
