Let's Talk About Power Rangers: Ranger Slayer #1
Power Rangers: Ranger Slayer #1 is out from Ryan Parrott and Dan Mora now and it’s awesome. The comic tells the story of what happens when Ranger Slayer returns to her own time and it’s incredible. I know it was meant to be a one-shot, but I see plenty of potential for follow ups. If you haven’t read it yet, you can purchase your copy from your favorite retailers or comiXology.
I’ll pick up where the preview left off with the exception of talking about how I’m curious what Finster-5 is working on. Was it the revival of Zedd? Drakkon? Something else? AH!
Well, some of Drakkon’s soldiers are out threatening civilians when they’re attacked by some undead soldiers. Ranger Slayer saves them, but isn’t quite sure what’s going on. She does go to atone for all she did under Drakkon’s control though and talks with Trini and Zack who aren’t happy with her. In a great moment though, Bulk stands up for Ranger Slayer and says she deserves a second chance. They then decide to storm the Command Center where the undead army seems to be coming from.
The siege involves Ranger Slayer and Bulk piloting the Gravezord to fight off the hordes while Trini and Zack sneak in and try to stop whatever’s going on. Turns out it’s Rita! That’s right, the empress of evil is back as a ghost. To make matters even more interesting is that Trini brought her back in the first place! That’s definitely a twist I didn’t see. So, Zack feels really betrayed not only by Ranger Slayer now, but also by Trini who didn’t tell him about this. Oh, and Zombie Goldar destroyed the Gravezord.
Well, after things didn’t go so well, Ranger Slayer, Trini, Zack and Bulk go to Commander Scorpina who’s currently commanding Drakkon’s army. They propose a plan to bring down Ghost Rita which results in the good guys and bad guys teaming up to bring down a bigger threat. It’s really awesome and I don’t know why, but I really like that it’s Trini and Scorpina that end up teaming together to bring down Rita. Also, what do you think of that Lord Zedd/Dragonzord mostrosity. It’s pretty amazing and beautifully drawn. I did not expect to see that at all and was pleasantly surprised.
After Rita’s defeat, everyone decides that Ranger Slayer should rule over everyone with Trini and Scorpina serving as her generals. Trini gets some boss armor and Ranger Slayer gets some gold decals added to her outfit. Before agreeing to it, Scorpina and Finster-5 are seen talking about a “temporary ceasefire” and “pretending” that she’s going to be the leader. This leads me to believe that there’s a decent chance that there will be a follow up at some point where Scorpina mutinies.
I absolutely loved this comic and am sad that it’s over. I love Ranger Slayer, and I really like the ways we’ve been able to explore her reality. What did you think of Ranger Slayer #1?
