Let's Talk About RWBY Volume 8 Episode 12 - "Creation"

We are getting near the end of RWBY’s eighth season. The twelfth episode aired this last weekend for Rooster Teeth First members, and it is called “Creation.” This episode was possibly my favorite still in the series ever. There’s one moment that is absolutely awesome. The whole episode is really good, but the one shot is just gorgeous, and I’ll include below the spoiler tag. You’ll definitely want to watch the episode before reading below.

It's risky, dangerous, and nearly impossible -- but it's the best plan they've got.

The episode starts out big. Ironwood and the Ace Ops (minus Marrow) are waiting for the arrival of Penny while a bomb is loaded into a transport. Ironwood has a big attachment that I assume amplifies his guns and Winter joins them. Qrow and Robyn start causing problems drawing the Ace Ops away though while Ironwood waits. At this point, Penny flies up and Ironwood is content that she appears to be alone. That’s when the good guys pull a “PSYCH!” Turns out that Penny was really Emerald, and she used her semblance to hide her, Oscar, and Team JNR. A fight breaks out, and Winter uses a glyph to charge Nora up for a big attack! That’s right, the moment has finally arrived where Winter goes against Ironwood because he’s gone cray cray. This is when we get my favorite shot of the series as Winter scores a big hit against Ironwood which causes his Aura to break and they’re able to jail him. It looks straight out of a video game.

At the same time, Ace Ops arrive to try to stop Qrow and Robyn, but Marrow is also there and uses his semblance to freeze his ex-teammates. This is so cool and I love it all! This is when we flash back and see all the build up to this moment.

So, it was Winter and Marrow in the elevator. On the elevator ride, Winter reaches out to Weiss at this point to figure something out. Then, the doors open and they have Qrow and Robyn there. I am very confused at this point simply because Qrow and Robyn seem surprised and no on guard when they see the two in the elevator. Wouldn’t they stay on guard seeing these two that at the moment they think are enemies? This is the one point of the episode that confuses me.

We find out that the heroes come up with a plan to grab the Relic of Creation and use its spirit, Ambrosius to help the people of Atlas and the people of Mantle. Fast forward and Team RWBY along with Penny enter the vault and as soon as Ruby grabs the Staff, everything else seems to freeze. The girls have two requests for Ambrosius. The first one, is to take all of Penny’s robotic parts and create a second Penny. This Penny will have the virus and her non-robot parts will have their own space. Guys. This is how Penny becomes a real girl! Penny is Pinocchio and this is the end of her fairy tale! I thought this was really nice.

The other request was to create a path to Vacuo for the citizens of Mantle and Atlas to escape to since Atlas is about to plummet to the ground and destroy both. Ambrosius is very impressed (and a little disappointed) that the girls have good details and plans for him to use. Ozpin explained earlier that Ambrosius requires blueprints in order to actually create which gave them enough of a heads up to come up with all of these ideas. Everything is done and it looks like everyone is safe. The only catch is that Cinder is in the refugee camp in Mantle. Everyone has to go through a different dimension to get to Vacuo safely, but if they fall off the path, they’re doomed. I can 100% see Cinder just start knocking people off to be a little punk.

Another great moment in the episode though is when Winter is locking Ironwood up. Jacque is there and asks if he and the General are doomed to die with Atlas (Team JNR start telling Atlas and Mantle that Atlas is falling but comms got cut, probably by Watts). Winter says that once everyone else is safe, those two would be moved. Jacque starts thanking her and Winter just gets the nice deep jab in that it was Weiss’ idea to still save them. That moment just felt good.
