Let's Talk About THE CLONE WARS Season 7 Episode 2 - "A Distant Echo"
On Friday, fans were able to watch episode 2 of The Clone Wars’ seventh season, “A Distant Echo.” This episode was so awesome, but if you haven’t watched it yet, this is your warning that there are spoilers ahead. New episodes air on Disney+ every Friday.
In this episode, Rex, Anakin, and the Bad Batch are following up on the lead from “The Bad Batch.” First, Anakin needs to talk to Padme. He goes into a bunker alone pretending to inspect Rex’s helmet while Rex stands guard. This is a very interesting moment. Padme does counsel Anakin to be there for Rex which is decent advice. The best part though is after the call when Anakin and Rex start walking away. Obi-Wan was trying to find Anakin and Rex tried covering for Anakin, but not very well and then as they walk away, Obi-Wan calls out “I hope you said hello to Padme for me.” Uh oh! This really does make one wonder how much Obi-Wan knew about the relationship. Did he think it was like him and Satine? Did he suspect it went further?
The Bad Batch accompanies Rex and Anakin as they head to Skako Minor where the signal believed to be Echo is coming from. They encounter some locals, the Poletecans, and it’s a problem for a minute, but they sort things out and are pointed in the right direction. I do appreciate this approach from the Poletecans where they don’t want the war to come to them, but after being disarmed, they do listen and don’t just keep trying to take out the clones. I feel like everywhere else is a lot more stubborn about understanding these things.
Shortly after this moment, Tech loses the signal and there’s a bit of an argument between all the clones. The Bad Batch is worried that Rex’s feelings are getting in the way of the mission and that this is going to end poorly. It’s always nice to see the clones show their personalities, even when they end up clashing and causing problems.
After some cool infiltration that ends up not being very stealthy (stupid Bad Batch…), Rex and Tech make their way into what appears to be a central command room or something like that and they actually find Echo! He’s in a pod-esque thing and he’s connected with a bunch of tubes. It’s a bit of a freaky thing to watch. He does eventually come-to and recognize Rex and he’s relieved that Rex came back for him. It’s a very tender moment actually and it’s going to be interesting to see how Echo recovers and influences the plot. I don’t think it’s going to be a simple reintegration.
I’m still not a big fan of the Bad Batch, but maybe they’ll grow on me. I do love watching the clones though. Rex is my favorite, so I’m glad these episodes have focused on him. Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Fives tell Rex and Anakin that something was wrong with the clones or something? Finally, when is Ahsoka coming back?
