Let's Talk About WANDAVISION Episode 6 - "All-New Halloween Spooktacular"
After the huge reveal of Evan Peters’ Quicksilver appearing at the end WandaVision episode 5, I couldn’t wait to see where the next chapter of the story would take us, and if you saw the episode, everything that Wanda has built around her is starting to unravel and get out of control.
Episode 6 is titled “All-New Halloween Spooktacular” and this episode is themed after the classic sitcom Malcolm in the Middle. I absolutely loved the opening sequence of the episode, and it features Wanda and Vision’s two young boys Tommy and Billy breaking the fourth wall and talking to the audience just like Malcolm did.
Pietro a.k.a. Quicksilver perfectly slips into the role of the wild and crazy uncle who is now sleeping on Wanda and Vision’s couch. He’s the cool uncle that the boys have taken a liking to. It seems like this alternate version of the character has memories of the MCU version of Pietro, rather than the memories from Fox’s X-Men, which I found interesting.
At one point he says, "Details are fuzzy, man. I got shot like a chump in the street for no reason at all, and the next thing I know, I heard you calling me. I knew you needed me.” Wanda is also confused about Pietro's new look.
The thing is, Quicksilver didn’t get shot like a “chump in the street”, he sacrificed himself in Avengers: Age of Ultron, by racing in front of Hawkeye who was holding a kid. Since this whole thing seems to be controlled by Wanda, I don’t know if this is a moment of reality or the pain that Wanda has built up over the death of her brother.
I’d really be curious to see what would happen to Quicksilver if he stepped outside the barrier that Wanda has surrounded the town. We saw vision leave the barrier in this episode, and that turned into an intense situation and he started being ripped apart and pulled back into the barrier.
Pietro is also very much aware that Wanda's Westview is a construct, and he seems totally cool with it. When he questions the existence of Tommy and Billy and where she’s been hiding them, Wanda ignores the question but reveals that she doesn't know how she created this version of Westview, saying, "I only remember feeling completely alone. Empty, I just... Endless nothingness."
So, there’s obviously a strong possibility that she has had some help. A lot of fans believe that Agnes has something to do with it.
At one point Vision is out wandering around town and on his journey of curiosity, he comes across people going in loops or just standing still, which may tease at the limit of Wanda’s influence. We do know from the last episode that the people are trapped and it’s like torture for them. Vision comes across one woman who has a tear running down her face, showing her true tortured soul.
While vision is walking around he comes across Agnes sitting in her car. He decides to wake her up from the hold that she is under and she refers to him as an Avenger and tells him he's dead and says that Wanda won't let them leave town. She says, "All is lost” and starts maniacally yelling “you’re dead!” over and over again before Vision puts her mind back the way it was.
She could be faking Vision out during this scene, maybe in an effort to drive Vision to find his way out of the barrier. I still can’t tell if she is a puppet in all this or the mastermind. Vision makes his way to the border of the town and starts to push his way through. It’s not easy for him and once he gets through, like I said before, he is being torn apart and pulled back in.
All while this is happening and Wanda and Pietro are spending time together, Tommy and Billy, a.k.a. Speed and Wiccan, are starting to gain their superhero powers. Wanda warns them not to go past Ellis Ave., which is the edge of town. Tommy is now super-fast like his uncle Pietro and he is a bit of a trouble maker that likes to cause hijinks. Billy on the other hand displays magical abilities similar to his mom and Billy senses that Vision is in trouble and tells his mom.
It’s at this point we see that Wanda's love for Pietro has its limits. At one point he casually jokes that Vison can't "die twice," and with that, she blasts him with her powers and sends him flying back.
This is where things start to get crazy. To save Vision from dying again, Wanda starts to expand the border to get Vision back in. As she expands it also consumes the SWORD base, which becomes a circus, and the agents who are caught in it become clowns. Obviously, we see what Wanda thinks of the organization.
Darcy is also engulfed, but we don’t see what role she takes on. My first thought upon seeing this is that Wanda’s boundaries could expand, and it makes me wonder if at some point it will engulf the whole world creating a “Multiverse of Madness”. I don’t know! Just a thought.
I also want to talk about the costumes in the episode because all of the Halloween costumes worn by the characters are full-on comic book accurate. I loved those costume designs. Agnes was also dressed in a witch costume, which could hint at her true nature.
As for what’s happening outside of the border, Monica and Jimmy head out to meet her aerospace engineer friend, who's created a vessel that'll get her back into Westview safely. Lots of fans think this could be Reed Richards. It’s very possible, but we’ll see.
Darcy goes on to share with them that going through the '“hex” twice has rewritten Monica's cells. It's unclear how this has changed her, but it reminds Monica of her mother's cancer, but regardless of what this means for Monica, she is determined to help Wanda.
In the comics, Monica gains the ability to transform herself into any form of energy within the electromagnetic spectrum thanks to being exposed to extra-dimensional energies. This is most likely what is happening here. If Monica gains these powers I assume that she will call herself Photon, which is her late mother's pilot callsign, and another one of Monica's comic codenames.
As for the commercial break in this episode, it was for "Yo-Magic, the snack for survivors" based on the early 2000 yogurt snacks. It’s a pretty unsettling ad as it features a boy starving on a small desert island. A shark offers him the magic-themed yogurt but the kid can't open it and he ages rapidly, leaving only his skeleton behind. Yikes! I wonder what this means for the story.
The shark is a deadly predator that offers this desperate kid some magic food, which ends up being a false hope of survival because he can’t get it open to eat it! It’s an illusion. Is this similar to what is happening to Wanda? Was Wanda offered a false sense of hope with Vision being brought back to life so she could live happily ever after? All the while she and her powers are being taken advantage of? I wonder if the shark represents Quicksilver.
I can’t wait for the next episode to get here! Are there any things that you noticed in the episode or theories you have that you want to share?
