Let's Talk About WANDAVISION Episode 9 - "The Series Finale"
Marvel’s WandaVision has come to an end. It sure had a great run and I certainly enjoyed the ride. While I loved the story and the way it ended, there was so much more I was hoping for, so I was left with a little disappointment.
It seemed like Marvel was setting up some crazy reveals over the course of the show. From the beginning, we knew that this would lead to Wanda’s full transformation into Scarlett Witch because that’s what Kevin Feige told us. We definitely got that, which was really cool and I totally loved it and her full-on Scarlet Witch look. But, there were so many other things teased throughout the series that just completely ended up being nothing.
So many fun fan theories and speculation that never turned into anything. All of the theories and speculation ended up being a lot more interesting than how the series actually ended.
The series did end on kind of a downer as Wanda finally decides to release the town of Westview from her hold and in the process, she had to let her family go. Vision, Tommy and Billy all vanish along with the hex that surrounded the town. As she and Vision put the boys to bed, Wanda says, “You know, a family is forever. We could never truly leave each other, even if we tried."
It was a sweet and somber moment. We also learn before Vision vanishes that he was a representation of the Mind Stone that lives in her, so I assume that means the twins are an extension of that.
There are also two end-credits scenes in the series. The mid-credits scene features Monica meeting an agent in a movie theater in Westview as the FBI is cleaning things up. The agent reveals herself to be a Skrull sent by a buddy of Monica's late mom, which I assume is Nick Fury.
The agent says to Monica, "He heard you'd been grounded. He'd like to meet with you.” She then points and looks up like they were going to have to head up into space to do this. Monica smiles, which tells us that she’s totally up for a space adventure. This is obviously going to lead into Captain Marvel 2 and/or the upcoming Secret Invasion Marvel series.
Speaking of Monica, she also showed off some additional powers in the finale. At one point Hayward shoots at Billy and Tommy and she jumps in front of the bullets, which end up passing right through her and dropping to the ground. She's not hurt, but her body seems to absorb the bullets' kinetic energy.
In the comics, Monica gained the ability to transform herself into any form of energy within the electromagnetic spectrum after getting bombarded by extra-dimensional energies. It seems like this is what’s going on with her in the MCU.
The very end post-credits scene features Wanda living in a beautiful area in an isolated cabin. We see her physical self boiling a kettle for tea and then her separate, astral projected self reading from the Darkhold, which is an ancient book of powerful spells, which was previously seen in Agents of SHIELD and Agatha's Dungeons & Dragons basement.
Agatha does mention that there's a whole chapter on the Scarlet Witch in the book, so Wanda is obviously reading it to get a better handle on her powers. Then we hear her vanished sons Billy and Tommy cry out “Help! Mom, please!" So it seems like they still exist in some way, in some place. It’s safe to say that she’ll eventually be going after them.
As for Agatha, her whole plan was to steal Wanda’s magic and make it her own. She just wanted to leave Wanda as a shriveled-up witch, like Agatha left her coven. She also offered up a little bit of the Darkhold's Scarlet Witch chapter, saying, "The Scarlet Witch is not born, she is forged. She has no coven, no need for incantation.”
She then goes on to say that her power exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme, which is Doctor Strange. After that, we learn that it’s the Scarlet Witch’s destiny to destroy the world. I assume that this will lead into the storyline for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Agatha thinks that she tempts Wanda to give her the powers by telling Wanda that she can live in bliss with her family in Westview. But, we all know Wanda is smarter than that and she mirrors the power-nullifying hex spell that Agatha used in her basement.
This is the moment where Wanda makes her full Scarlet Witch transformation and gets an awesome new costume before sentencing Agatha to live out the rest of her existence as the nosy neighbor Agnes, which is the character she gave herself in Wanda’s world. I have no idea if we’ll see her again, but there’s certainly a chance that we will.
Then we have the who Vision vs. Vision part of the story! The white Hayward-created version of vision that was brought to life using Wanda's Chaos magic is programmed to hunt down and kill the version of Vision created by Wanda.
There’s a cool battle between the two in Westview but that battle comes to an end when the two versions of Vision decide to have a conversation with each other. I guess the great actor that Paul Bettany has been talking about always wanting to work with was himself.
Wanda’s version of vision busts out the Ship of Theseus thought experiment, which deals with whether an object that's had all of its components replaced remains fundamentally the same object, which is a question that could be asked of both versions of Vision.
There’s a wonderful conversation here that leads to Wanda’s Vision touching the white version of Vision and he manages to access all the memories up to the point of his death from Thanos. I imagine this means that Wanda’s Vision infused himself into white Vision, who says, "I am Vision," and then flies off into the unknown. We’ll see him again.
So, what’s going on with Evan Peters’ fake Pietro? We see him holding Monica captive in his "man-cave," and in this moment we find out that he is really an actor named Ralph Bohner. This must be where Agnes got the name of her unseen husband.
This is one of the things that I hated about the show. I did not like that the creative team trolled Marvel fans by casting Peters in the role making everyone think that Wanda had broken up the multiverse and then it just leads to absolutely nothing. Peters’ character is no one. I feel that the way they used Peters in the series was a cheap unnecessary shot. It got fans super excited, it was something fans were obsessing over and if this really is nothing, it was just a cheap stunt to keep fans interested and intrigued to propel fans along as they drew this story out over nine episodes. It worked, but in the end, it was set up to be a juvenile boner joke and a disappointment.
There still might be something to this Ralph Bohner character. He still has super speed, and there’s a possibility that he could be the person in witness protection that Jimmy Woo was talking about. There still might be a revealing moment for this character that they are saving to reveal in a MCU movie, but we’ll have to wait and see.
In the end, I’m satisfied with how the show ended. It was a great story for Wanda and Vision and it took their character arcs to the next level. I’m excited to see how the characters continue to progress as Marvel continues to tell their stories.
I also want to point out the image above with Wanda’s family in superhero pose, was a cool little tribute to The Incredibles.
What did you all think of the WandaVision season finale? What are some thoughts or other things you’d like to point out?
