Let's Talk About WYND #1
James Tynion IV is well-known for writing some great Batman comics and now he’s just launched a new series through BOOM! Studios called Wynd and it’s interesting. The art for Wynd is provided by Michael Dialynas and is great. Wynd #1 is available now from local comic shops and from digital outlets like comiXology.
It’s a little crazy how timely this comic appears to be. It looks like there might be some good adventure and shenanigans down the road. However, this episode really sets up a backdrop dealing with very timely current issues revolving around racism and/or xenophobia. We learn that many humans seem to hate anything related to magic. Now, to be fair, we don’t know much about the magical aspects of this world, but it’s being framed as humans are the real monsters.
Now, we know that Wynd probably has magical ties. He has pointy ears that he’s advised to hide, and Oakley and Miss Molly seem really concerned about him. I’m also really liking Titus. I’m hoping he becomes more of an ally and trusted friend. As far as Wynd is concerned, I’m also very curious as to what his relationship with Thorn is.
Thorn is a groundskeeper at the castle, and Wynd has some way of communicating with him via long distance. Thorn’s father shows him how to kill some magical plants. This doesn’t seem to go over well with Thorn who is then summoned to see the prince. I’m not sure if Thorn and the prince Yorik are just really close or if they’re also lovers. Yorik is seemingly in really bad emotional shape and tells Thorn that he needs a really big favor and that’s where we leave off. My guess is that he’s part magic or something. What do you think?
I’m really digging Wynd so far, and am excited for the second issue.
