Let's Talk About WYND #2

Wynd #2 from James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas is available now. Things appear to be moving a little faster than I anticipated, but that’s not a bad thing. If you haven’t been able to read the issue yet, you can purchase a copy from your local comic store or through online retailers like comiXology.

This issue starts with the King forcing Yorik to agree to his last will, which is to maintain the blood laws which make anyone tainted by magic not even a second class citizen. I personally don’t understand why these people (not Yorik, he seems to not like them) are all opposed to the people touched by magic, but I’m sure we’ll get more exposition eventually. At one point we meet the Bandaged Man who apparently hates anything magic since something magical supposedly killed his family leading him to take revenge on all magical beings. We even see the Bandaged Man interrogate the groundskeeper, Thorn’s father, as the Bandaged Man sense he’s touched something magical. The groundskeeper explains that a Sprytle popped up in the garden and he took care of it, but that still doesn’t make the Bandaged Man happy. Yeesh...tough crowd.

Well, in the issue Miss Molly has a hard conversation with Oakley and Wynd. She explains that Wynd is going to be leaving their home and moving to Northport where apparently magic folk are welcome and don’t have to hide. The children don’t like the news, but Molly explains that it’s for the best and for Wynd’s safety. Apparently, she has some contacts, and it later turns out to be that Yorik’s butler(?) is talking to her seemingly asking her to help sneak out some people and this ends up including Wynd. We later learn that Yorik and Thorn are also leaving with Miss Molly. Oh, we also learn that Molly used to be a soldier. That’s not important (yet) but it’s cool.

The kids talk later and Oakley promises Wynd that they’ll find another way for things to work out. After Wynd talks to Titus the next day, he learns that a lot of people don’t like the “weirdbloods” and that led Titus and his company to leave a man behind so that they could get into a town. It really is a disheartening talk in the end, and really makes you wish Wynd would just listen to Miss Molly. However, before Miss Molly can even hope to get Wynd out with her, Oakley has concocted a plan that I’m sure will be problem-free and lead to this comic only lasting one more issue.

The final page focuses on the fact that Yorik and Thorn are going to be running away, and Thorn is late which upsets Yorik (understandably). This is going to create a very interesting third issue as Yorik is supposed to be brought to his father every morning to accept the last will of the king. What’s going to happen when Yorik doesn’t show? Not to mention, what the heck is Oakley thinking!?
