Lin-Manuel Miranda Developing a Stage Musical Adaptation of THE WARRIORS

Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to develop a stage musical adaptation of The Warriors, which is based on Sol Yurick’s 1965 novel. That book was adapted into the cult classic 1979 film directed by Walter Hill, which is what most people are familiar with.

In the film, a turf battle between New York City street gangs that rages from Coney Island to the Bronx. The Warriors are mistakenly fingered for the killing of a gang leader. Soon they have every gang in the city out to get revenge and they must make their way across the city to their own turf. While the original movie is great, the novel was much darker and offered an even grittier portrayal of street life in New York City.

When I first saw this news it didn’t really surprise me as it seems like something Miranda would want to do. I actually like that he’s developing a new stage musical! I wasn’t sure if he ever would after the success of Hamilton launched his Hollywood movie career.

Miranda most recently worked on helping polish the lyrics for the upcoming musical New York, New York, which is inspired by the 1977 Martin Scorsese-directed film. He’s also been doing a lot of stuff for Disney over the past several years.

Miranda is an incredibly talented individual, and I’m actually curious to see how The Warriors musical turns out. Is anyone else interested in this? Or are musicals just not your thing?
