Lionsgate and Hasbro Are Working on a MONOPOLY Movie

In light of the highly successful Barbie movie continuing to break records at the box office, the toy companies are digging deep to try and figure out which of their other properties would work for a money-making movie. One such project has been announced, as Lionsgate has sealed the deal, acquiring eOne TV and film operations from Hasbro for approximately $500 million.

When talking about the acquisition, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks said in a statement:

“This sale fully aligns with our strategy, and we are pleased to bring the process to a successful close. Lionsgate’s management team is experienced in entertainment and adept at driving value, and we’re glad to have found such a good home for our eOne film & TV business. We look forward to partnering with them, especially on a movie adaptation of Monopoly.”

So we will be seeing a Monopoly movie heading to our screens. There’s no word in the report what this movie will look like - live action vs. animated, a movie about playing the game vs. a movie set in the world of Monopoly, so we will just have to wait and see. Barbie was a logical adaptation, as the toy is based on people, so they were able to tell their story. I don’t see the point of a Monopoly movie, but I am interested in seeing how it plays out and the angle the studio takes with the story.
