Live-Action BARBIE Movie In Development at Sony
Of course a Barbie movie was going to eventually happen, and this isn't the first attempt to get the classic kids toy line to the big screen. Back in 2009 Universal Pictures was set to adapt it, but for one reason or another it fell apart. Mattel has now set up the project at Sony Pictures, and the plan is to give is a live-action adaptation. The studio is looking to start shooting the film by the end of the year, from a script written by Jenny Bicks. She was a writer on the HBO series Sex in the City, and also wrote the film What a Girl Wants, so I guess she's qualified to write a movie about Barbie.
Obviously I was never a big fan of Barbie's, but I did get one as a gift for Christmas once when I was a kid as a joke my uncle played on me. It gave the family a good life, but I was not amused at all.
There's no information on what the story will entail, but I'm sure it will be another big hit for the studio. Columbia Pictures’ president of production Hannah Minghella had this to say,
“We’ve always thought that the Barbie story had great potential, but a universe of possibilities opened up when Jenny, Walter and Laurie brought us their unexpected, clever, and truly funny concept. It captures everything that has made Barbie a classic for generation after generation while also standing on its own, establishing Barbie as a truly original screen character.”
The production company behind the film, Parkes + MacDonald released the following statement:
“While it’s an overused word, Barbie truly is a legend, a cultural symbol whose career choices have been as unlimited as her wardrobe. She is about empowerment, but never at the expense of fun. Our hope is to capture all of these aspects of Barbie in a modern take of the character that can appeal to moviegoers of all ages.”
I'm sure this news will make Barbie fans very happy.
