Live-Action MY LITTLE PONY Movie in Development at Amazon MGM and Hasbro

The world of My Little Pony is making the leap from toys and animation to live action for the very first time. Amazon MGM Studios and Hasbro Entertainment are teaming up to develop a live-action feature film based on the beloved toy line.

The colorful pony brand has been a cultural staple since its debut in 1982, spawning countless animated series, feature films, and a massive global fanbase. The most recent big-screen entry was My Little Pony: A New Generation in 2021, which landed on Netflix after its theatrical release was scrapped during the pandemic.

This new project marks a major first for the franchise because it’s a live-action adaptation. Details are scarce at the moment, with no creative team attached yet, but the news is sure to spark curiosity, and probably some skepticism, among fans.

For more than four decades, My Little Pony has been all about rainbow-colored ponies with vibrant neon manes, spreading themes of friendship and kindness. While originally marketed toward young girls, the franchise gained an unexpected wave of adult fans, known as “bronies”, thanks to the 2010 series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.

The show’s clever writing and inclusive themes earned it a cult following and even turned the ponies into symbols for challenging gender stereotypes.

Hasbro has produced over a thousand different pony varieties, and the toy line recently earned a spot in the National Toy Hall of Fame.

This move is part of Hasbro’s broader strategy to mine its iconic IP for film and television projects. Along with My Little Pony, the company is developing a Clue movie and TV series with Sony, a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series at Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series, also at Netflix, and even game-show adaptations of Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble for The CW.

No release date or casting details yet, but the ponies are about to trade Equestria’s animated magic for a flesh-and-blood CGI makeover.
