LOGAN Director James Mangold Shares His Vision For an X-23 Movie
X-23 is such a fantastic character and I loved how she was portrayed by Dafne Keen in Logan. Her performance was absolutely amazing! I know we won't see Hugh Jackman back in the role of Wolverine, but there's a very good chance that we'll see X-23 again. Fox would be stupid not to continue her journey. The end of Logan definitely left it open for that.
When Fox does decide to move forward with the X-23 movie, I hope that Mangold comes back to develop and direct it. While at the premiere of the Logan Noir screening, Mangold was asked about the film and where he thinks it should go, and this is what he told Screen Rant:
"A very honest film about young people, is what I'd say -- a very honest film about young people growing up."
Simple and sweet. It's definitely a great jumping off point to build a story around. As for what that story could be, X-23 creator Craig Kyle previously shared his thoughts on that saying:
"We know the kids were created and tested. I'd love to see some of the stories that we told [in the comics], see as much as we can of how she came to be, but then really get into the stories of what she was forced to do and commit. She said she killed people. She said bad people. The bulk of who X-23 and Laura killed in the comic books were bad people, but she did kill some children. She did kill a whole press corps. I think there's something powerful about watching her go through those horrors without any say and without any ability to not take those actions.
"A story I always wanted to tell was, once she's free and once she's gone through what she's gone through, the only way she can have a hope for a future is for her to go back and trace the lives that remained and were harmed by the actions she was forced to commit. You put her on this journey of redemption. She faces the families that lost fathers. The orphans, everyone that was touched by her horrific acts. And she can go through them one by one and face everyone affected by the murders she was forced to commit, if she can get to the end of that road without being killed by those that remain, there's something on the other side of that. I think it would truly be transformative for the character."
I love this concept, and it's one that I'd love to see eventually happen. I'm not sure she's gone through enough to set her down that path yet, but it still would make a great story. Whatever they end up doing next, you can bet that X-23 is going to be more fierce than ever! I'd really like to see this character evolve throughout multiple films. What journey would you like to see her go on next?
