LOGAN'S RUN Remake Finds New Life with Writer/Producer Simon Kinberg
Warner Bros. has been working on a remake of the iconic sci-fi classic Logan's Run for the past fifteen years, with people like Nicolas Winding Refn, Bryan Singer, Alex Garland, and Ryan Gosling becoming attached over the years, only for every incarnation of the project to run out of steam. But now THR reports that the studio has brought on a new heavy hitter in the hopes of finally bringing the film to life: writer/producer Simon Kinberg.
Kinberg, who's been involved with the X-Men franchise since 2006 and produced the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, Star Wars Rebels, and at least one Star Wars Anthology movie, definitely has the geek credentials to work on this movie, and he likely has enough pull in the industry right now to actually get this to the starting line. If he gets it to the casting phase, it'll be interesting to see if they end up going with actors who've worked with him on his franchises before, or if they'll go for more unknown quantities, but knowing Hollywood, they'll be looking for big names for this film. It was a YA property before YA properties became huge moneymakers for studios, and with the most recent update about this film being that the studio was considering reworking it to feature a female lead, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they went after X-Men and Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence for this.
It's unknown what direction Kinberg is going to take the script — he's producing as well as writing the story — but they're looking to bring on a writer to turn his basic story into a screenplay sometime in the near future. For those who don't know, Logan's Run is based on William F. Nolan's 1967 novel and is set in a world in which everyone is killed at age 21. Logan is an executioner who carries out those deaths, only to end up becoming a "Runner" when his own 21st birthday occurs.
Do you think this iteration of the remake will ever hit theaters?
