LOKI Writer Michael Waldron Opens Up About His Role in Crafting AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY and SECRET WARS
Michael Waldron, best known for shaping the chaotic brilliance of Loki and penning Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is now offering details on his behind-the-scenes contributions to Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
The writer recently reflected on his evolving role within the Multiverse Saga and how he’s been lending a hand to the Avengers dream team now steering the franchise’s biggest event films.
Originally, The Kang Dynasty was set to arrive this year with Jeff Loveness (Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania) writing, while Waldron was tackling Secret Wars. But a series of shakeups, including Jonathan Majors’ legal troubles and the mixed response to Quantumania caused Marvel to pivot.
Kang was removed as the MCU’s main villain, and both Loveness and Waldron were reportedly taken off their respective projects, with Waldron asked to rework what would become Avengers 5.
Despite the turmoil, Waldron has had a huge influence on the Multiverse Saga. His work on Loki Season 1 and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness laid much of the groundwork for the MCU’s multiversal chaos with concepts that will no doubt play a crucial role in Doomsday and Secret Wars.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, Waldron explained how his involvement in the Avengers movies evolved over time.
"I was writing the movie after that but there wasn’t a filmmaker attached yet, I was just involved in all those conversations. When that movie went away, I was working on what would become 'Avengers: Doomsday' and 'Secret Wars' for a time, and then they brought in the Russos and Steve McFeely."
With Joe and Anthony Russo returning to direct and Stephen McFeely leading the script, the Avengers franchise is in familiar hands. But Waldron isn’t entirely out of the picture.
"As those guys got in and wrapped their hands around what these movies were going to be, and [then] there was an opportunity for me to come back in and get to know Joe and Anthony and Steve and really just help however I could. That’s what I’m trying to do is just support them."
It’s likely Waldron’s deep understanding of the Multiverse and the concept of Incursions introduced in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is proving invaluable as McFeely shapes the story.
Considering Secret Wars will likely bring together multiple realities and heroes, having the guy who built the MCU’s Multiverse blueprint in the room sounds like a smart move.
McFeely, who co-wrote Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame with Christopher Markus, will be tackling Doomsday and Secret Wars solo this time around. With Waldron assisting behind the scenes, the scripts are in good hands.
Marvel hopes to go big again with Russos jumping back into the MCU along with the return of Robert Downey Jr., who will rejoin as Doctor Doom, which is still wild to me.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
