Look Back at Alfonso Cuaron's GRAVITY With This Illuminating Video Essay
It's been a few years since Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity took the box office by storm, and this video essay from Filmscalpel (via TheAwesomer) examines whether or not the film's outstanding effects were actually as innovative as many film critics thought upon the movie's initial release.
I thought I knew a good deal about the making of this movie (I'd heard all about the light box, for example), but I actually didn't realize that a majority of the digital effects had been largely completed before the actors stepped onto the set for the first time. That's the one way this film truly did break the mold — it was the first time an entire movie had been timed to its visual and special effects instead of the other way around. Watch the video below:
