Lucasfilm Might Produce a Film Adaptation of the Action Fantasy Novel CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE for Disney

It looks like Lucasfilm might end up producing a new film franchise for Disney that isn’t a part of the Star Wars or Indiana Jones franchises. The film project will be an adaptation of the action fantasy novel called Children of Blood and Bone from author Tomi Adeyemi.

The project was originally set up at Fox and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy is interested in bringing it to life. This Is Us writer Kay Oyegun is in the process of making a deal with the studio to write the script. For those of you not familiar with the story, here’s the synopsis:

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers?and her growing feelings for an enemy.

That sounds like it will make a great movie! I also think it’s pretty cool that Lucasfilm is open to making new films outside of the franchises that they are best known for. I’m happy to see them expand into new and different territory.

Dope director Rick Famuyiwa was attached to the project while it was at Foxm and according to Deadline, he’s still attached to helm it. Fox executive Emma Watts is also still overseeing the film. It looks like this is one of the few preexisting projects from Fox that will actually survive the merger and make it out of development over at Disney.

There’s also a sequel to the book that is supposed to come out later this year so that would set up a possible new franchise for Disney and Lucasfilm. At this point, it all comes down to whether Lucasfilm likes the script that is being written. This sounds like a great story that I would enjoy, and I hope that Lucasfilm ends up taking it on.
