Lucasfilm Shuts Down Every Attempt to Bring Mara Jade Back Into STAR WARS
It’s been a long time since Lucasfilm reset the timeline and rebranded the old Expanded Universe as Legends, but fans are still holding onto hope that certain iconic characters will find their way back.
Some already have, reworked and folded into modern canon. But one major figure continues to be locked out, and according to recent comments, that doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon.
Mara Jade, one of the most beloved characters from the Legends era of Star Wars, is still sitting on the sidelines. Once introduced as the Emperor’s Hand before evolving into a Jedi Master and the wife of Luke Skywalker, she played a huge role in shaping post-Return of the Jedi storytelling for decades. Yet in today’s canon, she hasn’t even been mentioned.
That absence hasn’t stopped fans from speculating. Every time a mysterious red-haired woman shows up in a new project, theories start flying that Mara Jade is finally back.
It’s happened more than once, including when readers thought a scene in a The Last Jedi novelization hinted at her return. It didn’t. That moment was actually tied to a completely different character, Camie Marstrap, pulled from deleted scenes of A New Hope.
Now we’ve got a clearer picture of why Mara Jade hasn’t resurfaced, and it turns out people have tried. Including her creator.
During a panel at MegaCon 2026, author Claudia Gray shared her experience trying to bring Mara into the current canon: “A couple of times I was like, ‘Really? Really, no Mara Jade?’ And they were like, ‘[Stern voice] Nope.'”
Gray isn’t alone. Timothy Zahn, the writer who originally created Mara Jade in the Heir to the Empire trilogy, also pushed for her return: “I asked them too.”
Zahn has talked about this before. At Dragoncon 2024, he explained that his attempts were met with responses ranging “some place between ‘no’ and ‘heck no.'” So, it’s not for lack of interest.
From a storytelling standpoint, the hesitation makes some sense. Modern Star Wars canon has taken a very different approach to Luke Skywalker’s life after Return of the Jedi. His journey is more isolated and tragic, especially with how things unfold leading into The Force Awakens.
Introducing a character like Mara Jade, especially one tied so closely to Luke romantically and emotionally, would complicate that arc in a big way.
Back in Legends, Zahn had the freedom to build Luke’s future over decades of storytelling. That included founding a Jedi Order, falling in love, getting married, and even becoming a father. Mara Jade had room to grow into a fully realized, essential character. Trying to fit that same evolution into the current canon timeline would be a serious challenge.
Still, this is Star Wars and things change, characters return, and ideas get revisited. While the answer right now is clearly no, history has shown that nothing stays off the table forever.
For now though, Mara Jade is in a time out and Star Wars creators aren’t allowed to play with her.
