Lucasfilm Will Not Recast Iconic STAR WARS Characters Again After SOLO

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently revealed that after what happened with Solo: A Star Wars Story, they will not recast any iconic Star Wars characters again. She told Vanity Fair:

“There should be moments along the way when you learn things. Now it does seem so abundantly clear that we can’t do that.”

Honestly, I thought Solo was great! They say the movie bombed, but it made around $400 million! That’s not a bad haul. Director Ron Howard previously addressed that saying:

“It made a lot of money, it just didn’t live up to expectations. I came in eager to help, felt like I could, and had a blast. Normally it takes three years, I worked eight months and had an experience. I feel very good about the way it turned out. I loved the way it played to audiences, which I witnessed. All of that I am able to feel good about.

“[Maybe] going back and revisiting an origin story for a beloved character may not be what the fans were looking for. It seemed to me looking at the opening, big but not as big as the others, I think that was [only] the hardcore fans. [The drop-off] tells you how many people are tagalongs who need to wait to see what people think or if it’s essential, if it’s a zeitgeist movie or not. It didn’t hit the zeitgeist, for whatever reason.”

As for casting Alden Ehrenreich in the role of Han Solo, I enjoyed him in the role! I know a lot of critics did not care for him, but I didn’t have any issues. Then you’ve got Donald Glover as Lando, and he was fantastic! In fact, Lucasfilm is developing a Lando series with Glover reprising his role. There’s always a chance that Ehrenreich could pop up in that, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Before a CG version of Luke Skywalker was introduced in The Mandalorian, Star Wars fans wanted to see Sabastian Stan cast in the role of the character, but that’s obviously not going to happen. That was thrown out the window as soon as that digital version of Luke was introduced.

What did you think of Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover being recast as Han and Lando in Solo? What are your thoughts on Lucasfilm vowing to never recast any iconic Star Wars characters again?
