Lucasfilm's STAR WARS: ROGUE SQUADRON Will Tell an Original Story Inspired by the Game and Books

Last week Lucasfilm announced that Wonder Woman franchise director Patty Jenkins will direct a Star Wars film titled Rogue Squadron. There were no details revealed for the film, but the filmmaker recently offered some during an interview with IGN.

She explained that the film will tell an original story and that it will be inspired by the Rogue Squadron games or books. It will not be a direct adaptation of a pre-existing narrative:

“[In the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie] we're doing something original with great influence from the games and the books. There's a lot of things being acknowledged and understood about the greatness of all of those things, but yes, it's an original story and I'm so psyched to do it."

The original Rogue Squadron video game launched in 1998. The series deals with the Rebel Alliance unit Rogue Squadron, who under the command of Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles use starfighters to engage and defeat the Galactic Empire. The games are set during episodes A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi and recreate the battles that take place during those films. I loved those games. and a new one was recently released.

As for the novels and the Dark Horse comic series, both titled Star Wars: X-Wing and written by Michael Stackpole, the stories in these are set after the original Star Wars trilogy. They followed a new Rogue Squadron under the command of Wedge Antilles after Luke left the group to focus on rebuilding the Jedi Order. There were ten books in the novel series and 35 issues of the comic series.

It’ll be really cool to see what kind of story that Lucasfilm and Jenkins have set out to tell, and I can’t wait to watch it when it hits theaters on December 23rd, 2023.
