Lucy Liu Says If She Got To Star in a Superhero Film in Her 20s Her "Career Would’ve Been Easier"

Lucy Liu is making her big comic book movie debut in DC’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods. She takes on the role of the villain character Kalypso, one of the three daughters of Atlas, who come to Earth to reclaim the power that fuels Shazam. Helen Mirren and Rachel Zegler play the other two daughters.

During a recent interview with The Cut, Liu was asked about starring in a superhero movie for the first time at 54 years old and she says that she wished it would’ve happened earlier in her career because it would have given her more opportunity. She explains:

“If it had happened earlier, it would have been miraculous. It would have been a different story; my career would have been easier. There would have been more opportunity.”

While I understand what she’s saying, I just want to point out that I’m a fan of Liu and I love the roles that she’s been able to play over the course of her career! One of my all-time favorites was O-Ren Ishii in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill trilogy. That was better than any superhero movie role that she might have landed at the time! She was so badass in that film!

Her big movie breakout role, though, was Alex Munday starring opposite Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore in 2000’s Charlie’s Angels. When talking about that character, she said:

“That character, Alex, was important because of the composition of the three of us regardless of whether that movie did well or not. It’s really the visual that can help propel the next thing. And I say visual because even if a film doesn’t do well, it starts to move the needle a little in toward the direction you want it to go. Not just for yourself, but for others.”

While Lui didn’t get to star in a superhero film in her 20s, she has quite the career and I can’t wait to see what she ends up doing next! Someone needs to build some kind of action franchise around her!
