Luke Skywalker Confirmed to be The Last Jedi in STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII, So What Does That Make Rey?

When the title of Star Wars: Episode VIII was revealed to be The Last Jedi, fans began to discuss and speculate what that actually means. Who is the last Jedi!? Is the word Jedi meant to be singular or plural!? Director Rian Johnson was amused by the kind of discussions that fans were having regarding the title, and if you're still waiting for a definitive answer, we have one for you today. During an interview with Good Morning America, the director confirmed that the title refers to the one and only Luke Skywalker. He says:

"It's so funny when people started asking that when the title was announced because I never even pondered that question... In my mind its singular. They say in The Force Awakens that he's gone on to find the last Jedi temple. Luke is the last Jedi."

So basically almost all the gut reactions that the fans had regarding the title when it was first revealed were right. Deep down we all knew that Luke was the last Jedi referenced in the title. Now let's talk about what this could mean for the Jedi in the ongoing story.

At the end of the trailer that was released last week, we hear Luke say, "I only know one truth. It’s time for the Jedi to end." If Luke is the Last Jedi and the Jedi are going to end... then what in the hell is Rey? What is she training for in the trailer? Is she going to be something beyond a Jedi!? Is she the one that will actually bring balance to the force?

Bringing balance to The Force has been a main theme throughout the course of the saga. Qui-Gon Jinn thought that Anakin was the chosen one, but we all know how that turned out! Of course, it could be even bigger than bringing balance to the force.

Another thing we hear in the trailer is Rey mentioning "light", "darkness", and "balance" but then Luke comes in and says, “It’s so much bigger than that." Luke has obviously learned some things about the Jedi and their origin that leads him to believe that there are things going on beyond The Force.

I can't even begin to tell you what that might be, but we did get to see some of the Jedi scripture that Luke has been studying during his stay at the Jedi Temple. Whatever he's learned, he's going to pass that knowledge to Rey and train her to be something more than a Jedi.

As for her parents, they will play a role in the story. We don't know how or who they are, but while talking to MTV, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said that it plays an intergral role in the story:

"It is integral. It is important. It's something that, interestingly enough, even as we were sitting and coming up with The Force Awakens, it was one of the central questions we were all asking ourselves."

I've also seen a lot of fans talk about Luke turning to the Dark Side, which Mark Hamill says is possible in the second video below, but I don't think that's going to happen. Luke already has an understanding that there is something more to everything than the light and the dark sides of the force, so he wouldn't fall into the trap of being swayed to the Dark Side, especially in his old age. He's too seasoned and too smart for that.
