Lupita Nyong'o Set to Star in Book to Series Adaptation of AMERICANAH for HBO Max With Danai Gurira Writing

HBO Max has picked up the series adaptation of the novel Americanah, written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, with Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther, Us) starring, and Danai Gurira (Black Panther, The Walking Dead) writing and showrunning for the limited series. Deadline reports the following synopsis for the series:

Americanah tells the epic story of Ifemelu (Nyong’o), a young, beautiful, self-assured woman raised in Nigeria, who as a teenager falls in love with her classmate Obinze. Living in a military-ruled country, they each depart for the west, with Ifemelu heading for America, where, despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple for the first time with what it means to be black. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous undocumented life in London.

Nyong’o read the novel back in 2013 and began thinking of the adaptation. She then shared the project with Black Panther co-star Gurira, and they were able to get it off the ground. This sounds like an interesting, original story and is in pre-production for HBO Max. Are you interested in this story?
