M. Night Shyamalan Has Two New Thrillers in The Works at Universal Pictures

With films like The Visit, Split, and Glass, director M. Night Shyamalan has found his way back into my good graces. There was a long stretch there were I just did not like the films that he was making. Well, he’s back on a roll, and according to Deadline he’s got two new film projects brewing over at Universal Pictures.

The two untitled thrillers are set to be released on February 26th, 2021, and February 17th, 2023. Shyamalan independently financed his last three films with a combined production budget of $35M. They ended up making generated $625M worldwide at the box office. He plans to independently finance these next two movies.

We don’t have any plot details to share with you on these films right now, but Universal Pictures President Peter Cramer said in a statement:

“M. Night Shyamalan continues to create exciting, highly original stories that keep global audiences on the edge of their seats. There is no one like him. He is a master filmmaker working at the height of his powers, and we are honored that he has once again chosen Universal to be the home for his next two incredible projects.”

Shyamalan also offered up a statement in regards to developing original film properties:

“There are wonderful studios out there, but Universal has made it a mandate to release original films. They are the best at finding an audience for new stories with unexpected tones.  I believe original films are crucial to the longevity of the theatrical experience.  I am so excited to be working with them again and bringing new stories to the movie screen for years to come.”

I’ve gotta agree with Shyamalan on that. Hollywood needs to be creating more original content and it will be interesting to see what kind of original stories that Shyamalan will tell with these new projects.

Shyamalan’s next project to be released is an episodic psychological thriller for AppleTV+ called Servant.
