M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming horror film Old looks fascinating and strange. I’ve liked what I’ve seen in the trailers that have been released and I’m curious to see how the story will play out and what the big Shyamalan twist/reveal ending will be. Well, it turns out the movie doesn’t have an ending yet! The director is still trying to figure that out.

During a panel at the Tribeca Film Festival, Shyamalan said, “No one has ever seen anything like it in it’s tone and the way it’s just, I mean, it’s like nothing else.” He went on to say that the film is “inappropriate” and “subversive”. He then explained why he hasn’t come up with an ending yet:

“I’m deciding on the minor note; how to end on a minor note. Unbreakable ends on a kind of a dip, right? He goes to the dark note, that minor note at the end. The guy you thought was the best friend is the villain….the minor note sticks to you forever.”

The filmmaker also shared that his new film was inspired by his real life experiences, saying:

“My father’s very old right now. He has dementia. He comes and goes. And the kids are now directing and singing concerts and, you know, when did this happen? So I made a movie about that feeling.”

The movie was also inspired by the graphic novel Sandcastle which was written by Pierre Oscar Levy and illustrated by Frederik Peeters. The synopsis reads:

This summer, visionary filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan unveils a chilling, mysterious new thriller about a family on a tropical holiday who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly … reducing their entire lives into a single day.

The film stars Gael García Bernal, Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie, Aaron Pierre, Alex Wolff, Vicky Krieps, Abbey Lee, Embeth Davidtz, and Rufus Sewell.

Old opens in theaters on July 23, 2021.
