M. Night Shyamalan Says REMAIN Is the “Highest-Testing” Movie of His Career

M. Night Shyamalan has built a career on getting audiences uncomfortable in the best possible way. From The Sixth Sense to The Village, Unbreakable, Split and Glass, the filmmaker has spent decades mixing suspense, supernatural ideas, and emotional drama into stories that keep people guessing.

But, according to Shyamalan, his next movie may hit differently than anything he’s done before. His upcoming film Remain is shaping up to be a major swing for the director, and it already sounds like one of the most interesting projects he’s tackled in years.

The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor and is being developed alongside bestselling author Nicholas Sparks. A romantic thriller from the guy who made Signs and Old, paired with the writer known for emotional love stories, feels like an unusual mix.

Remain follows an architect recovering from depression who relocates to Cape Cod, where he crosses paths with a mysterious woman. Romance, psychological tension, and supernatural elements are all apparently part of the package.

During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Shyamalan opened up about how the project came together with Sparks, explaining:

“We traded ideas and slowly wove two very different perspectives into a single, thrilling, supernatural love story. In the end, we get to tell it our own way. Mine through film, Nicholas through his novel.”

That creative setup is pretty fascinating on its own. Instead of adapting one another’s work, the two storytellers essentially built the same story side by side through different mediums.

Shyamalan also shared an update on where the movie currently stands in production, and his comments are definitely going to grab fans’ attention:

“Just between us, it’s my highest-testing movie of my career. We’re now in post-production, finding every detail. Honestly, my hope is that when you experience Remain, you feel both sides of it at once — full of love and that quiet, lingering unease that doesn’t let you go.”

That’s a pretty huge statement considering the filmmaker’s track record. Across 16 feature films, Shyamalan has delivered some massive hits, polarizing experiments, and a few genuine cultural phenomena. Whether audiences love or hate a particular project, his movies usually leave people talking.

What makes Remain especially compelling is that it sounds less focused on a giant twist and more interested in emotional tension mixed with supernatural dread. If Shyamalan can pull off that balance, this could end up being one of his strongest films in years.
