M3GAN Spin-Off SOULM8TE Resurfaces With an R Rating After Being Pulled From Release Schedule

The killer doll universe is stirring again. Even though SOULM8TE, the long-gestating spin-off set in the world of M3GAN, was yanked from Universal’s release calendar, the project just flashed a new sign of life. The MPAA has officially slapped it with an R rating, and that changes the conversation.

According to BloodyDisgusting, the film earned its R rating for “strong violence, gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, and language.” That sets it apart from both M3GAN films, which leaned into their PG-13 ratings while still delivering chaotic AI mayhem. SOULM8TE sounds like it’s aiming for something much darker and far less restrained.

That rating update is especially interesting considering the movie was effectively pulled from the schedule. Back in December, Universal Pictures removed the film from its planned January 2026 release date and handed that slot over to a Cujo-inspired monkey horror movie.

At the time, reports indicated that Blumhouse and Atomic Monster were shopping the project around for a new distributor. Since then, things have been quiet on the public front.

Now, this rating suggests the film isn’t dead. It may just be waiting for the right home.

Originally announced in 2024, SOULM8TE expands the twisted AI playground first introduced in M3GAN. The story centers on a recently widowed man who purchases an artificially intelligent companion to help him cope with the loss of his wife.

That AI is played by Lily Sullivan, who steps into the role of a lovebot designed to provide emotional support and companionship. Things spiral when the man attempts to push the technology further, transforming what was meant to be a comforting presence into something far more dangerous.

The concept is similar toCompanion, but set within the slick, high-tech horror framework audiences already associate with M3GAN. And if that R rating is any indication, this spin-off isn’t holding back.

The supporting cast includes Claudia Doumit, Isabelle Bonfrer, Emma Ramos, and Sydney Blackburn, rounding out what sounds like a tense, character-driven sci-fi horror story.

Footage from the film was screened privately at CinemaCon in 2025, but nothing has been released publicly. An official MPAA rating, though, usually means a film is locked and ready to go. Studios don’t submit movies for classification unless there’s forward momentum.

So even without a distributor or release date announced, this feels like the first real hint that SOULM8TE could be gearing up for an eventual rollout.
