MAD MEN Actress Kiernan Shipka Cast as Sabrina in Netflix's RIVERDALE Companion Series

Netflix has cast Mad Men and Feud actress Kiernan Shipka in the role of Sabrina the Teenage Witch in their untitled Riverdale companion series. The series is based on the graphic novel series called The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and the actress seems like the perfect choice to play the character. It was previously revealed:

Sabrina reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age tale that traffics in horror, the occult and witchcraft. It's described as in the vein of Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist and finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while fighting the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

Sabrina Spellman is also described as "an empowered young woman, half-human, half-witch, who is just beginning her dark education as a sorceress, even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High. Intelligent, compassionate and brave to the point of recklessness, Sabrina is all that stands between us and the forces of darkness that threaten our world."

Riverdale and Sabrina executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa had this to say in a statement about the casting:

"We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list. This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own. I am thrilled that Kiernan is playing Sabrina and have no doubt that she will embody the strength, courage and boldness that has made the character a fan favorite.”

Netflix already ordered two seasons of the series. Aguirre-Sacasa, who also serves as showrunner and chief creative officer of Archie Comics, wrote the script. Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater and Lee Toland Krieger will direct. The plan is to shoot both seasons one and two back-to-back all throughout next year from February to October.

Even though I'm not really that into Riverdale, I'm actually looking forward to this new Sabrina series. The supernatural Buffy the Vampire-type stuff is more up my alley.
