MADAME WEB Director S.J. Clarkson Talks About the Film's Tonal Similarities to JESSICA JONES
Director S.J. Clarkson is getting ready to debut her most recent film, Madame Web, but it isn’t her only work with Marvel. She previously worked on the Netflix shows Jessica Jones and The Defenders, and she says that she has drawn similarities between the two projects, Jessica Jones and Madame Web, both in the tone of the stories, as well as between the two lead characters, Jones (Krysten Ritter) and Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson).
In a recent interview with Total Film, she said Madame Web has a "grounded" and "gritty" tone. Clarkson describes Jones' and Madame Web protagonist Cassandra Web as "loners." Not only that, but they're both "a little bit abrasive, a bit quirky, and on the outer edges of things."
"With JJ, she had PTSD. That [sense of] reality to it was its success in a way. I suppose it's the same with Madame Web," she explained.
The synopsis for the film reads:
“In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures… if they can all survive a deadly present.”
Madame Web also stars Emma Roberts, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps (The Upshaws), and Adam Scott (Severance). The film will be released in theaters on February 14th.
