MAGICAL GIRL FRIENDSHIP SQUAD and WILD LIFE Revealed as 2 New Shows for SYFY's TZGZ Block

SYFY has revealed two new shows for their late-night adult animation block called TZGZ: Magical Girl Friendship Squad and Wild Life. MGFS stars Anna Akana, Quinta Brunson, and Ana Gasteyer as they battle otherworldly threats. It’s a bit of a parody of magical girl shows like Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura. You’ll be able to watch the premiere on September 26 at 12 AM ET/PT.

This female-driven, anime inspired comedy about two twenty-somethings (Akana & Brunson) who after meeting a little red panda named Nut (Gasteyer) are destined to save the Universe… as soon as they get their shit together. A parody of the magical girl genre, it’s “Sailor Moon” meets “Broad City” – 100% girl power. It originated as a shorter-form series, MGFS: ORIGINS, which TZGZ acquired. Creator Kelsey Stephanides came up with MGFS in 2015 when she realized there weren’t many adult animated series created by or starring women, especially who looked like her as an Asian American – and that needed to change. Women led on and off screen (Hallie Cantor from “Doll Face” is head writer/EP), Kelsey & our series regulars can speak to women in comedy, diversity & representation in animation and more.

Meanwhile, Wild Life stars John Reynolds, Baron Vaughn, Reggie Watts, and Claudia O’Doherty. This show looks a lot weirder to me. The premiere will be on September 26 at 12:15 AM ET/PT.

This comedy can be described as if “Walking Dead” smoked a lot of “Adventure Time” & binge-watched “Friends.” It’s all too timely and familiar as a show about a group of friends just trying to entertain themselves after the apocalypse. There’s the pacifist cheetah Glenn (John Reynolds), bubbly dolphin Marny (Claudia O’Doherty), hyper fox Hudson (Baron Vaughn), psychedelic koala Darby (Reggie Watts), self-care loving panda Debbie (SkittLeZ Ortiz) and energy drink-guzzling sloth Viv (Natalie Palamides).
