Mahershala Ali Reportedly Appearing as BLADE in AVENGERS: SECRET WARS Despite Saying He’s Done
Just when it looked like Mahershala Ali had officially put Blade in his rearview mirror, a new Marvel rumor is dragging the Daywalker right back into the conversation.
Ali’s long-awaited MCU run as Blade has become one of Marvel Studios’ most frustrating projects, but a new rumor claims the two-time Oscar winner could finally make his live-action debut in Avengers: Secret Wars. There’s a catch, though. This reportedly wouldn’t lead to the solo movie fans have been waiting years to see.
Insider Blue Minutes claims Ali will appear as Blade in Avengers: Secret Wars, possibly playing a variant of the character. The rumor also says Marvel isn’t moving forward with a standalone Blade movie starring Ali.
According to the scooper, Ali’s previous comments about being finished with the character don’t tell the whole story: “He’s keeping it as a secret. He already played his character in his animated series what if and now he’s ready to do this in live action. Get ready for it”
Marvel obviously hasn’t confirmed that Blade will appear in Secret Wars, so this remains a big rumor. Still, it would be one wild way to finally pay off something Marvel started back in 2019.
Ali was announced as Blade at San Diego Comic-Con that year, complete with the actor walking onto the stage and putting on a Blade cap. What followed was years of development problems, including multiple writers, director issues, and four release date changes before Marvel eventually scrapped the movie.
Ali technically entered the MCU before any of that happened. He provided an uncredited voice cameo as Blade during the post-credits scene of Eternals, but fans have yet to actually see him wield the sword on screen.
Earlier this year, Ali sounded like he had finally had enough of waiting. When asked about his future as Blade, he said, “I’m done. I’m doing this and anything moving forward. I’m over that. I’m done with that,”
Those comments made it sound like the Mahershala Ali Blade era was over. Then during the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, while promoting Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, Ali also revealed that he had spent a considerable amount of time physically preparing to play Blade. At least that work ended up benefiting his latest movie.
“I got to go train for a year, so at this point, I’m so grateful that they made a wonderful contribution to our film,” he said.
It’s pretty crazy that Marvel announced Ali as Blade seven years ago, put his voice into an MCU post-credits scene, had him train for a year, and still never managed to get his movie in front of cameras.
That’s what makes the Avengers: Secret Wars rumor so interesting. If Marvel really has abandoned plans for Ali’s solo Blade movie, giving him a role in Secret Wars could provide one last opportunity to actually see his version of the Daywalker in live action.
But, it also makes no sense if they have no plans to move forward with a solo film. Why introduce the character in Secret Wars never to see him again? I don’t think there’s much truth to this, but we’ll see.
Of course, I’d still love to see Ali get his shot playing the role. But to introduce him with no future plans seems stupid.
