Maika Monroe Says the IT FOLLOWS Sequel Script Is “Exceptional,” Hopes to Start Filming Next Year
It’s been more than a decade since It Follows terrified audiences with its slow-burning dread and unique supernatural premise, but the haunting isn’t over yet.
Maika Monroe, who starred in the original film, recently gave fans an update on the long-awaited sequel, and it sounds like things are finally moving forward.
During a recent interview with Decider, Monroe shared that writer and director David Robert Mitchell has already completed the script, and she’s eager to get back into the eerie world that made her a horror icon.
“I’m hoping—rumors are of next year. I don’t need to get into a bunch of scheduling and stuff, but we’ve all been busy.”
The actress went on to tease just how impressed she is with the new story.
“But this script is so good. I absolutely think this movie should get made, because I think fans will be really happy. I think it’s exceptional. We’ll see. Fingers crossed!”
In It Follows, Monroe played Jamie “Jay” Height, a teenager hunted by a mysterious, shape-shifting entity that transfers from person to person through sexual contact.
The film became a modern horror classic, and it was praised for its atmosphere, originality, and chilling score. It currently holds a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is often credited with helping to usher in a new wave of smart, stylish horror.
There’s been talk of a sequel for years, Tom Quinn, co-president of Radius-TWC, even hinted at one back in 2015. After years of speculation, the official confirmation finally came in October 2023, when Monroe and Mitchell were announced to reunite for the project.
The sequel is being developed by Neon and Good Fear Content, two studios known for backing bold, creative genre films. It will be interesting to see how the story will progress with the next film.
