Margot Robbie Says She Pitched BARBIE as a Film That Could Make $1 Billion, and She May Not Be Far Off
The Barbie movie is upon us, and it’s gearing up to be a big box office success. Star of the film, Margot Robbie, pitched the film to Warner Bros. when it was still just an idea, and part of that pitch was reportedly her belief that the film could be big enough to make $1 Billion in its theatrical run. The actress explained to Collider:
"I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director. And then I gave a series of examples like, 'Dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg' – pretty much naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years. And I was like, 'And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig.' And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?"
We won’t know how well the film will do for a little while, but Deadline reports that the film’s opening weekend could be as high as $130 million for its opening, which would be the best pre-sales since Avatar: The Way of Water. However it ends up, I’m just glad that we have movies out again that are getting people back to the theatre.
Barbie and Oppenheimer both hit theatres today. What are you going to go see first?
