Margot Robbie Weighs In on Lady Gaga Playing Harley Quinn: "She's Going To Crush It!"
When you think of the character Harley Quinn, you may think of actress Margot Robbie, who played the demented villain previously known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel in three films over the last 8 years, including Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and The Suicide Squad. The two-time Academy Award-nominated star of Barbie is now handing over the baton, as the Joker sequel will feature the character Harley Quinn.
Joker: Folie à Deux will hit theatres this fall, and will feature Joaquin Phoenix returning to the role of Arthur Fleck, opposite Lady Gaga as Dr. Harleen Quinzel.
Robbie was asked about handing over the role while on the red carpet at this weekend’s Golden Globes, where she was asked by Variety if she had reached out to Lady Gaga, and what she thought the portrayal would look like. She responded:
“She’s going to crush it! She’s going to be amazing. I actually haven’t spoken to her about it. I almost don’t want to know so I can save it for a surprise when I see the movie.”
Robbie previously told Variety that she is excited another actor is going to put her stamp on Harley Quinn and she does not feel possessive over playing the superhero role.
“I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her. Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”
I know I might be in the minority, but I did not love the first Joker movie, so I don’t have high hopes for the second one. I do enjoy Lady Gaga as an actress though, and I think she may just make this performance a really fun and wild one.
Warner Bros. will release the film in theaters on October 4th, 2024.
