Mario Lopez Says the SAVED BY THE BELL Revival Is 'Edgier and Hipper' This Time Around
Mario Lopez has made his career in current years as a host of popular news series like Access Hollywood and Extra, and red carpet events that have kept him in the limelight. But he launched to stardom when he played the character A.C. Slater on the hit 9’0s series Saved By The Bell. The series ran for four seasons, then spun-off into the College Years series, a couple of TV movies, and even a New Class series with a new cast. But the show has lived on in syndication and is still a beloved series to those who grew up with it, which brings us to the revival series we are eagerly awaiting that is headed to the NBC streaming service, Peacock.
The new Saved By The Bell will bring back a few of the original characters and introduce a group of new Bayside High students to the world. Here’s the synopsis:
When California governor Zack Morris gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the highest performing schools in the state – including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the over privileged Bayside kids a much needed and hilarious dose of reality.
The show will welcome back Lopez, Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Zack Morris, and Elizabeth Berkley as Jessie Spano. In a recent interview on The John Roa Show podcast, Lopez talked about the series and how it differs from the original, saying:
"Well, it's not shot in front of a studio audience. It's shot on film this time and Tracy Wigfield who's the showrunner who did 30 Rock... she's there this time around. It's a little edgier, not like dirty by any means, but a little edgier and hipper and a lot of fun. We have a great young cast. And some of the old cast is back. And it's pretty clever the way they've sort of set the characters to where they are now."
It’s great that they have good writers working on the show, and it’s no wonder it’s a little edgier and hipper, as teenagers are generally cooler now that they were in the 90s. I can’t wait to see the series. I was totally bummed when I signed up for Peacock and the show wasn’t there. We got a trailer a while back, so I expected it to premiere with the streamer, but Lopez recently spoke out about the schedule, saying they had shot all the episodes but two when the pandemic hit, and they are anxious to get back to set to finish up the season.
So it looks like we will just have a to wait a little bit longer. But it sounds like it will be worth waiting for. Are you excited to watch the new Saved By The Bell? Check out the trailer below in case you missed it.
